Copperhead

This venomous snake is usually found near shallow, slow moving sources of water, and is an extremely good swimmer. Typical diet for the copperhead includes fish, frogs, insects, small turtles, mice, rats and other snakes.

This particular snake does have predators. In Person County, copperheads fall victim to snapping turtles, owls, eagles, herons, egrets, other snakes and other copperheads. Large bullfrogs have been known to kill and eat baby copperheads.

Though usually not aggressive, the copperhead is poisonous and should be avoided.
