Catfish

The name "catfish" refers to a family of fishes rather than one particular specie. In Mayo Lake, several catfishes are present including black and brown bullheads and channel cats.

These particular catfish inhabit slow moving water. They typically seek shelter under and around submerged sticks, stumps and in bank undercuts.  Catfishes have an exceptional sense of smell and taste, since their bodies are covered with taste buds, which they use to find food. Catfish will eat nearly anything, but the most common diet includes worms, minnows, crawfish, frogs and insects.

Catfish are prized by sport fishermen, if not for food, for their fighting abilities. Fishermen use a variety of natural baits. Prepared baits made from things like garlic, cheese, blood, chicken livers and dog food are also popular.
